Our Story
About Exotic Bird Shop
A family aviary in Sarasota, Florida, raising companion birds to a standard we would want for our own home.
Founded on better standards
Exotic Bird Shop began in 2009 when our founders, both former zoological keepers, grew frustrated with how companion parrots were being produced and sold in the United States. Birds were pulled from the nest too early, never allowed to fledge, and shipped without records. We built the opposite: an aviary where every chick fledges properly, weans on its own schedule, and meets dozens of people before placement.
Our facility
Our 14,000 square-foot Sarasota facility houses climate-controlled nurseries, oversized flight enclosures, a dedicated quarantine wing and an on-site veterinary suite. It is inspected annually under our USDA Class B license (#58-B-0142) and voluntarily audited to Association of Avian Veterinarians husbandry guidelines.
The team
Fourteen full-time aviculturists, two certified avian veterinarians and a dedicated behavior consultant. Every bird is assigned a primary caretaker who tracks its weight, diet, socialization and training from hatch to placement.
Our commitment
We never source wild-caught birds, never sell unweaned chicks, and maintain a lifetime rehoming commitment — if a placement ever stops working, that bird can always come home to us.
